Personally, I find writing a role a chore and avoid doing so if there's not a specific need to have one for the Imms. Generally, the character's in my head and what's written into role is for the Imms.
Can change and flow with the character over its lifetime.
I find it so that my characters true nature tends to form while playing the character. While most of the forming is at the low levels, this may happen at mid levels as well. Pick up a new trait and stick with it-kind of way. Stuff that makes my character more interesting.
Well defined character beliefs that guide but don't hold back the growing char.
Generally, it's good to have a few of these to define the character, but these can be picked up along the way as well.
Story mode - wherein you add a chapter or two every few ranks..
Stories are useful when giving justification for a change and fun to play in general. However, if nothing changes in the character, there is no need to write a role chapter about it (unless giving an example for Imms or fishing for XP and rewards).
