Pick ranking areas and enemies who drop lots of shit, so you can heal serious 1. in your inventory with it.
Groups are ok but you NEED your skills mastered - the best group is one which can heal you (bard or healer) so that you can spam your most dangerous skills without mind of failure.
Don't even try to PK people until 30+ and even then you're fragile as hell.
Only dual wield when you're not tanking. Run dagger shield everywhere else. Reducing the amount of damage you take is much more important than doing more damage every round.
Pick a cabal early and get into it asap. Cabal powers make a difference. Protection from evil, blade of the codex, detect hidden, call chameleon, whatever. It all helps. Some of it helps a LOT.
If you're new, I suggest herald, fortress, battle, or tribunal. Mistakes in empire and scion can get you ininducted, and outlander is hard as hell to play without serious game knowledge investments.
I don't suggest dagger specs for newer players cause its one of the tougher specs to play. Its also an endgame setup - dagger specs are most powerful at level 51, with mastered skills, legacies, and preps. They're the underdogs for most of their early life, unlike, say, giant bash specs or battle berserker anythings.
