I think our ideas of competing are skewed.

Can you get plenty of PKs? Sure. I get tons of them, especially when I'm playing one of the powercombos I'm comfortable with. You'll find me hella annoying as a level-sitting evil ranger with 40 damroll at level 20 and 60 damroll at 35. I'll wait till random people are hurt from fighting mobs, and then ambush them and one-round them and rack up ten kills or so for every death I get. I've done it with several rangers, none of whom really tried to reach hero. Hell, I'll bet you could match some of their PK ratios against the most quality characters in the game.

Does this mean I'm "competing?"

No, it means I have a special instinctive talent for multikilling newbies and enough patience and experience to scour every damn ranking area in the game and then some.

For me, competing means going toe to toe with some of the toughest and most experience players in the game. I tried to compete a lot with my hero characters, and most of them died horrible, horrible deaths as I slowly accumulated more knowledge and more experience. Now, I'm still not competitive at the highest level of PK in the game, at the league where players like Twist and Mek throw down in, but I am much more close to it now that I have quest knowledge, prep knowledge, and area knowledge (like these silly boats) which I did not have before. Every little bit counts - stuff like this is important.

I recall dying once because a guy slept me on the sea, summoned me onto the boat, blinded me, cursed me, and then fucked me up while I panicked like crazy, spamming commands like a headless chicken, completely confused because I thought I was still on the ocean, and didn't realize I was in a closed room. This would not have happened if I knew what I knew now, and had the layouts of the boats more or less memorized, including what doors are closed and where to get off.

There are other times when something like wave dancer could have made a difference between a win and a loss, a victory and a defeat. You're just lying to yourself if you think you don't need every scrap of knowledge to match up against the heaviest hitters in CF.

Summoning mobs: Something I still don't fully understand after 7 or 8 years at this game.

Ignore this blatant anti-Villager post and instead tell me how the fuck to get on a boat on the sea.

wrathpuppet March 01, 2012 03:20PM

The boats are not even quest related really.

zannon March 02, 2012 08:52AM

Re: The boats are not even quest related really.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 09:11AM

Damn it, secret is out

zannon March 02, 2012 11:25AM

Holy shit. I had no idea it was this complicated.

wrathpuppet March 02, 2012 03:45AM

Punctuation is important.

Demtok March 01, 2012 06:19PM

I spent years and years trying to figure this out as well.

vortexmagus March 01, 2012 03:37PM

How ironic

Coumidin March 02, 2012 12:42AM

Ask any of my chars IC about it. I'm always glad to share what I know, ICly. (n/t)

vladamir March 02, 2012 01:13AM

Most people are, and I am as well. But it's not always within a character's RP to ask, of course. (n/t)

Coumidin March 02, 2012 02:42AM

Seriously?

Splntrd March 02, 2012 10:30PM

If you think those things are bad.. Ktengs...

istirith March 02, 2012 07:30AM

Doesn't work for all boats.

Sam March 01, 2012 03:39PM

Which is even more reason to share information and help newbies out.

vortexmagus March 01, 2012 03:41PM

but it is a quest, not all quests end with success.

abernyte March 01, 2012 11:43PM

That's not a good analogy

Coumidin March 02, 2012 02:41AM

I have, and you're wrong.

Matrik March 02, 2012 05:12AM

It's the truth.

Splntrd March 02, 2012 06:32AM

You're the one guy who plays by all the rules

Coumidin March 02, 2012 06:19AM

Oh god, dreaded Kteng's

Matrik March 02, 2012 06:28AM

When it comes down to it. I normally don't want to put in the time

TJHuron March 02, 2012 05:48AM

So why would you expect a hand-out?

istirith March 02, 2012 07:35AM

It's called a spoon around here, pal. Take your reaganomics to the sportsboard. (n/t)

Coumidin March 02, 2012 07:49AM

I've helped a lot of people in game. Even with the dreaded rat-trap.

istirith March 02, 2012 07:53AM

Then don't do it? No one says you have to. (n/t)

Matrik March 02, 2012 06:02AM

You do have to, if you want to compete.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 06:44AM

I don't think you do.

Matrik March 02, 2012 06:51AM

No you don't.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 06:49AM

I think our ideas of competing are skewed.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 07:32AM

Clearly.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 07:55AM

Accumulation of knowledge

Coumidin March 02, 2012 09:23AM

Right

Matrik March 02, 2012 09:40AM

No, no. That's not my argument at all.

Coumidin March 02, 2012 09:55AM

Ah, I see.

Matrik March 02, 2012 10:04AM

Incentive

Coumidin March 02, 2012 10:17AM

I agree, it does work opposite to the way I'd like...

Matrik March 02, 2012 10:22AM

Who said anything about taking them out?

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 09:43AM

Just open discussion with some rambling.

Matrik March 02, 2012 09:50AM

So your idea of competitive is being able to win every fight?

Matrik March 02, 2012 07:44AM

No, its more like being *able* to win every fight.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 07:51AM

Being able to win every fight. That's exactly what I said isn't it?

Matrik March 02, 2012 08:29AM

That's an extreme example

Coumidin March 02, 2012 09:02AM

It is, for sure, an extreme example.

Matrik March 02, 2012 09:11AM

Gnome warriors

Coumidin March 02, 2012 09:36AM

Heh

Matrik March 02, 2012 09:43AM

Wait, what?

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 09:58AM

No, no, I know they can be.

Matrik March 02, 2012 10:08AM

Well

Coumidin March 02, 2012 10:05AM

One day someone will wow the crowd with a Hunter or Animist too, I betchya (n/t)

Matrik March 02, 2012 10:09AM

See, to me, that's flashy and stupid.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 08:05AM

See, I'm not judging your ideas of competitiveness.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 08:33AM

dude, you're having issues vs Orcs as ranger, the only newbie i see here is you

zoskia March 02, 2012 12:36PM

An orc can defeat a ranger in the wilds.

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 02:25PM

Right that's like saying a newb can defeat a scion lich if he finds him sleeping & convulsing

zoskia March 02, 2012 02:59PM

..unless he makes mistake..

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 03:26PM

Re: ..unless he makes mistake..

zoskia March 02, 2012 03:34PM

There are logs of skilled rangers doing just that.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 03:17PM

Some rangers i consider skilled and their death stats

zoskia March 02, 2012 03:45PM

And there you have it. An orc killing a skilled ranger.

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 04:08PM

Cmon now this is just playing semantics ;-)

zoskia March 02, 2012 04:09PM

With orcs, fallback+permalag with bash+savage feeding on every bash is possible.

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 04:21PM

Tactics 101 (n/t)

zoskia March 02, 2012 04:23PM

Even without fallback and slave, the orc can still win.

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 05:12PM

See my Tactics 101 post, i don't consider ranger who dies to orc skilled

zoskia March 02, 2012 03:19PM

- deleted -

zoskia March 02, 2012 03:11PM

Yeah uh.. Ranger vs Orc isn't exactly an easy match up pre hero.

Matrik March 02, 2012 02:23PM

I think you're sort of stupid.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 02:07PM

This is not a flame

zoskia March 02, 2012 02:50PM

Never say never.

DurNominator(VIP) March 02, 2012 02:58PM

Tactics 101

zoskia March 02, 2012 03:13PM

Knowing the ranger is there, and expecting the trap and coming prepared for it: Just as priceless.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 04:11PM

You know, you still don't get it, this is one of the things that you keep missing yet essential IMO

zoskia March 02, 2012 04:21PM

I've played both at hero.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 02:41PM

Really?

RobDarken March 02, 2012 08:38AM

Okay, but the debate you engaged me in is one of semantics.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 09:38AM

True, killing seems to be a much more reliable way of getting that sword.

Coumidin March 02, 2012 06:52AM

It's just, he specifically says quests/riddles.

RobDarken March 02, 2012 06:55AM

Heh or just find it lying around. Like the Five Faces of Evil I found on the ground with my assassin at level 11.

Matrik March 02, 2012 06:55AM

You're part of the immspiracy to ensure an uneven playing field.

vortexmagus March 02, 2012 01:18AM

There are certain items you must have when you yell. nt

qurdind March 01, 2012 03:25PM

I'm not sure how questy this is considered, so I don't want to give too much info. nt
