He had two beers in the span of four hours. AZ apparently has zero tolerance or whatever. The DUI was from acting stupid (more dangerous than being drunk imo). I was in the car with him in his stupid 350Z that he drove like a maniac. Anyway, we went through a cinder block wall at about 40 and hit a tree. Both without a scratch thanks to awesome engineering, seat belts, and no thanks to air bags. Damn things didn't even inflate, just filled the compartment with a fog that made the situation more confusing than it needed to be.
Anyway, to the point. I went to his court hearing with him. He went well-dressed, acted appropriately, and didn't mouth off.
Two other guys were there for the same thing that went before him. They were dressed like "thugs" and acted out, cursed, and generally made fools of themselves.
My buddy got 1 night in jail (supposed to be a minimum of 7 and maximum of 30 days). The other two got the full judgement of 30 days.
Just an example of how acting respectable in those situations can help. As to the light sentence, it also includes AA meetings, defensive driving course, and 1 year with an interlock device.
Needless to say, he is intelligent and won't touch a steering wheel if he has had even 1 beer ever again. Of course, someone could always be woefully stupid and get a second DUI. In those cases that person might as well be given the death penalty for stupidity.
