Right there with you

But I do it a bit differently. I cannot simply focus on the lecture by listening, but if I'm doodling or doing some other mindless task, I'll remember nearly everything. But if I take notes lose like half the lecture.

Hocus pocus, you're made of bogus

Srev November 15, 2013 05:53AM

Student-centered education is the way to go.

DurNominator(VIP) November 11, 2013 04:09AM

I think the logical conclusion there is to remove the teacher entirely (n/t)

Elystan November 11, 2013 07:03AM

Not really. He is there to guide the learning process.

DurNominator(VIP) November 11, 2013 08:06AM

Is that really true? Asian countries (I'm thinking of China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc) routinely score extremely well on every measurable test they're given.

vortexmagus November 11, 2013 05:58AM

Overgeneralisation

starbright November 19, 2013 10:36PM

Competition is used to cull the weak-minded.

Quixotic November 12, 2013 01:52PM

hehe

Matrik November 12, 2013 01:59PM

Where in China?

DurNominator(VIP) November 11, 2013 08:15AM

The place with slanted buttholes (n/t)

HairyOrangutan November 12, 2013 12:05PM

It's a very relative thing.

vortexmagus November 11, 2013 09:04AM

to be fair (racist stereotypes incoming) most Asian societies value education as a "thing" of itself, not just another way to get rich (n/t)

morocco November 11, 2013 08:36PM

Blood type B negative????? FAILURE RUNS THROUGH YOUR VEINS!!! (n/t)

Nurok November 12, 2013 07:54AM

insert asian dad macro here (n/t)

morocco November 12, 2013 07:10PM

Wait.. what?

Java November 11, 2013 03:35AM

Different number of students from one class in that high percentile.

DurNominator(VIP) November 11, 2013 05:28AM

It's about the difference made in one year

PaulO November 11, 2013 04:31AM

It's just deprogramming.

Death_Claw November 10, 2013 06:27PM

US education system would be better off now if they had listened to John Dewey more. (n/t)

DurNominator(VIP) November 12, 2013 06:49AM

I do like Ken Robinson

PaulO November 10, 2013 06:48PM

I'll disagree.

Death_Claw November 10, 2013 07:53PM

I'll further disagree

Elystan November 11, 2013 03:00AM

You should've read the OP...

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 08:29AM

Some people do. I do my best learning with lectures. (n/t)

Matrik November 11, 2013 09:44AM

I've taught a lot of people a lot of things over the years.

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 02:26PM

Re: I've taught a lot of people a lot of things over the years.

Jib November 12, 2013 10:12AM

He's also discounting:

Matrik November 12, 2013 10:34AM

Nah, I'm not.

Death_Claw November 13, 2013 09:30AM

It's still anecdotal, due to the specificity of the material.

Matrik November 13, 2013 09:55AM

Nah, I removed the "go fuck yourself" part.

Death_Claw November 13, 2013 10:04AM

You don't offend me.

Matrik November 13, 2013 10:26AM

I thought about mentioning that but didn't want to go down that road ;)

Jib November 12, 2013 10:53AM

Teaching in general is hard work.

Matrik November 12, 2013 11:29AM

I'm an auditory learner

Rade November 11, 2013 03:32PM

Right there with you

Lokain November 12, 2013 09:25AM

Very similar here. Obviously death_claw hasn't met many people. (n/t)

Matrik November 11, 2013 05:43PM

Actually, I think the best method is a combination of senses. Seeing something, hearing something, and doing something combined. It's close-minded and ignorant to say "auditory is the best or reading is the best".

Jib November 12, 2013 09:52AM

The best method...

Death_Claw November 13, 2013 09:47AM

I'll believe it when I see it.

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 06:30PM

actually i'm an auditory too, dad

morocco November 11, 2013 10:09PM

Better take some notes when you do. (n/t)

MiyagiYojimbo November 11, 2013 06:48PM

I was able to get through school with no notes...

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 07:06PM

Yeah, I think a part of it is what material is being covered

PaulO November 12, 2013 05:47AM

Poor empty soul. One day you will find meaning. At least, we all hope so. (n/t)

Matrik November 11, 2013 07:15PM

OMG. It's almost as if different people learn differently.

Java November 11, 2013 03:23AM

I don't think that's true at all...

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 08:35AM

You're making some interesting assumptions.

Java November 11, 2013 08:57AM

The funny part is...

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 02:18PM

I don't like...

Matrik November 10, 2013 06:20PM

recommendations for elementary schools from a jeopardy! champion

morocco November 10, 2013 06:19PM

Wife is a teacher. She loved montessori.

Matrik November 10, 2013 06:20PM

I went to Montessori. We all ended up fucked up, fwiw. (n/t)

wrathpuppet November 10, 2013 06:49PM

Define "fucked up"? Like meth addicts or something? n/t

Death_Claw November 10, 2013 07:54PM

There's not a lot of meth around here.

wrathpuppet November 10, 2013 08:47PM

to be fair i'm also a high school dropout

morocco November 11, 2013 02:38AM

So your recommendation...

Java November 11, 2013 03:29AM

also it's not my recommendation to force anyone to do anything vis-a-vis education

morocco November 11, 2013 03:42AM

went to public high school (one of the best in the state not that it matters)

morocco November 11, 2013 03:33AM

So... you liked Montessori because it was fun and you could play games? Still not seeing it. nt

Java November 11, 2013 03:36AM

you should really read the wiki on the idea

morocco November 11, 2013 03:50AM

He's just out looking for a fight. (n/t)

Matrik November 11, 2013 04:18AM

If you can't control the flow of your own life anyway, discussing the merits or demerits of montessori is pointless. (n/t)

Matrik November 10, 2013 09:50PM

Well, I don't think you can "go back".

Death_Claw November 10, 2013 08:53PM

I'll agree with that, but...

wrathpuppet November 11, 2013 04:33AM

"Training kids" is easy.

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 08:43AM

can you be my dad? (n/t)

morocco November 11, 2013 08:46PM

I can be your dad.

RobDarken November 11, 2013 10:56PM

Home school can work.

Matrik November 11, 2013 05:09AM

Oh, it totally can work.

wrathpuppet November 11, 2013 05:38AM

I would tend to agree. I was homeschooled...

RobDarken November 11, 2013 07:15AM

Well...you do actually have to want to spend time with your kid...

Death_Claw November 11, 2013 08:46AM

Yeah

PaulO November 11, 2013 05:53AM

This amuses me.

Java November 11, 2013 03:27AM

You should read my post.
