There are no "good guys" in this universe. Also you're being naive if you think it's about Assad or even Middle East as a whole. It's about demonstrating the leadership of America first and foremost. What we think about that demonstration - you can read in our Ministry of Defense briefing I posted, what your side says about it - I'm sure you're aware because you follow media.
Sad panda because it's one step further on the escalation spiral, I don't enjoy the idea of nuclear war overall, so seeing it getting closer makes me sad. The relations between US and Russia will improve when US will accept the fact that it is losing its status as a world hegemon. This will happen through economic collapse, military takedown, or (each day more likely) both.
Like I've said numerous times here through the last three years, the current state of America allows only one way of it staying on top of the world - having a world war it doesn't participate in (WW1 and WW2 scenario repeated). Too bad for you guys that is impossible because once WWX comes, you're fucked, as thanks to Wernher von Braun, the oceans are no longer a shield.
