Racism is symptomatic of the class divide which it conceals. Applying race explanations to the problems caused by inequality also neatly fits the agenda of the ruling elite, which can continue with its high-profile (but in a wider social sense, insignificant) gimmicks like making a big deal about electing a black president, while at the same time blocking healthcare reform that would raise millions (black and white) out of poverty.
