You don't need a fire axe. Get a regular ole axe used for chopping down trees, not the ones used for splitting logs (they're heavier). If you're fit enough to swing it (adrenaline will be helping), it's a very dangerous weapon. Personally, with axes and bats and that type of thing I kinda worry about getting entangled with the other person after the first swing.
So I'd recommend making your own pepper spray. If you live where there is jungle, chances are pretty good you'll have no problem getting very hot spices you can use to make a potent spray. There's 100s of guides online. Very easy to do and has the benefit of being non-lethal. Just make sure you get a good spray bottle that shoots it far away from yourself, not something that is going to make a mist 6 inches from the bottle to potentially blow into your face. If anyone asks, tell them you use it to spray your garden. Or if you don't have a garden, it could be a Laotian salad dressing. Or a generic pepper sauce for cooking. Depending on how you make it, it could be quite tasty.
Or you could take a page out of the medieval castle playbook and put boiling oil above your gates. That helps keep the barbarian hordes away.
