On the topic of gun control...

January 23, 2013 05:59AM
First off, I do own firearms, I do not own any 'assualt rifles' I own roughly 15 rifles of various calibres mostly bolt/falling block/lever action. I own 1 semi automatic firearm, and that is a 12 gauge shotgun that I use for trap/skeet. I want to ask you all a series of questions, I will answer my own questions in this thread, but I am curious as to how other people feel.

Here are my questions

#1 Which do you feel was a worse event and why. The Sandy Hook shooting? Or, the Oklahoma City bombing?

Personally, I feel that I'd rather face a gunman than an explosive device. The gunman has to make the conscious decision to pull the trigger, and could decide to stop firing at any time. The bomb would be indescriminate. Therefor, I feel that Oklahoma City was far worse.

#2 Do you honestly believe that through any kind of government enforcement/program/prohibition that we could prevent either of the 2 events mentioned above?

No, I believe that if someone commits themself to a course of wanton violence and destruction that they will succeed regardless of the method...the evidence supports this opinion as well. People who decide to take a life/lives succeed with whatever options they have available (fire/bombs/poison/guns/list goes on).

#3 Do you feel that prohibition has worked...ever in any capacity?

No, right now I would have an easier time obtaining 'prohibited' items such as marijuana/cocaine/etc than I would getting my hands on a semi automatic rifle. Also, I need not point out how horribly the prohibition of alcohol failed.

#4 What is the real problem people are trying to address?

I believe, the real issue is simply that humans are a violent species. We have killed each other violently all throughout history. More people die violently in the world EVERY SINGLE DAY than died at sandy hook. To me, pointing at assault rifles as the problem is nothing more than people's inability to accept that yes, humans are violent and kill one another on a regular basis. Individuals themelves may in fact, not be violent. But as a whole...holy shit are we a violent species. Firearms are an easy scapegoat, as they are a tool which we use for violence.

Anyone agree with me?

Take it to the gun board.

Stevers January 24, 2013 06:30AM

T-t-t-take it to the gun board

Batman January 24, 2013 06:59AM

#1 has issues.

vortexmagus January 23, 2013 09:28AM

I think the bomb example is fine, specifically since you aren't allowed to have bombs but he crafted one regardless.

It's not about stopping them...

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 07:37AM

Stopping to reload or "switch guns" isn't going to save a single life.

Matrik January 23, 2013 07:52AM

Does Not Compute

What Rob said is extremely accurate.

Nurok January 23, 2013 08:28AM

I view this as the more reasonable approach to examining violence/danger and people who cause it.

Batman January 23, 2013 08:31AM

Dude seriously

Rade January 23, 2013 08:26AM

Buy it or not, it's a fact. The 1 second it takes to change a magazine isn't going to save a single life.

Frosty January 23, 2013 08:25AM

This word...fact...

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 08:44AM

This word MIGHT. I don't want to make changes to the constitution based on "gee it might work". (n/t)

Frosty January 23, 2013 12:31PM

There has been no proposed changed to the constitution, chicken little.

JimmyDean January 24, 2013 12:21AM

You've convinced me you're a fucking retard who shouldn't be allowed a computer or telephone.

Frosty January 24, 2013 09:54AM

That pigeon holing is your failure, not anyone else's.

Matrik January 24, 2013 06:13AM

I'm with Materk here.

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 09:33AM

Should we remove sights/scopes from guns too? Not knowing where the bullet will go would be more effective then smaller magazines, don't you think?

Frosty January 23, 2013 12:35PM

Re: This word...fact...

Matrik January 23, 2013 10:09AM

I feel similarly in terms of upside downside.

Batman January 23, 2013 08:47AM

I think the effort expended on magazines etc..

istirith January 23, 2013 08:59AM

This I agree with

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 09:10AM

I should have been a little more unambiguous I guess.

istirith January 23, 2013 09:38AM

B-but if THINK it's a band-aid, isn't that what matters!

Batman January 23, 2013 09:40AM

Cho reloaded quite a bit.

RobDarken January 23, 2013 08:06AM

In my opinion we have more than enough children to spare.

RobDarken January 23, 2013 07:46AM

I agree with you, not exactly but generally speaking same page. +1 my good man. (n/t)

Good post sir

Matrik January 23, 2013 06:25AM

Yeah, I'm pretty much with you on all of those.
