Re: Does Not Compute

So,

The comment that RobDarken made about Cho was true.

Onlookers stood by while Cho reloaded, and then continued shooting. The thing you aren't considering JimmyDean, is that in the event of _actual_ gunfire threatening your life, you will take cover. 99% of people's Fight or Flight response is going to be 'Flight' when faced with superior weaponry, and it damn well should be (survive at all costs). So your scenario where someone stops the armed guy by intervention with a book is unrealistic on more than one front. People will flee (or die trying to) in those scenario's, and likely I would be one of them.

As far as lessening the 'effect' of a mass shooting by limiting what firearms are available/magazine sizes are available. I go back to my original argument that when someone sets themselves in motion to commit an act of violence on a large scale, they succeed regardless of the tool. I am going to go back to the Oklahoma city bombing on this one. Timothy Mcveigh decided he wanted to blow up a federal building in response to what he saw as unlawful raids on militia (he sound sane to you??). And he did. He did so by using ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) and Diesel fuel. Both of which are publicly available, and to be honest the mixture he used was published by our government (to the public) back in the 50's as a safer alternative to using dynamyte for construction/demolition crews (The nitrate/diesel mixture was much more stable than nitro glycerine). The death toll of his actions was 168 people including 19 children under the age of 6.

So here is where I break this down

You are telling me that a crazy gunman killed 20 students and 6 adult staff at sandy hook with an assault rifle, and as a result we should consider implementing a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

I am telling you that in 1995 a crazy man killed up 19 children under the age of 6 and 149 adults without expending a single bullet.

I challenge your belief that any kind of firearms limitation/ban will lessen the death-toll or impact of any of these type of event. If anything, people will turn to alternate methods to accomplish their goal, much as Mcveigh did. When they arrested him, he had a semi automatic pistol on him fwiw.

On the topic of gun control...

Take it to the gun board.

Stevers January 24, 2013 06:30AM

T-t-t-take it to the gun board

Batman January 24, 2013 06:59AM

#1 has issues.

vortexmagus January 23, 2013 09:28AM

I think the bomb example is fine, specifically since you aren't allowed to have bombs but he crafted one regardless.

It's not about stopping them...

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 07:37AM

Stopping to reload or "switch guns" isn't going to save a single life.

What Rob said is extremely accurate.

I view this as the more reasonable approach to examining violence/danger and people who cause it.

Batman January 23, 2013 08:31AM

Dude seriously

Rade January 23, 2013 08:26AM

Buy it or not, it's a fact. The 1 second it takes to change a magazine isn't going to save a single life.

Frosty January 23, 2013 08:25AM

This word...fact...

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 08:44AM

This word MIGHT. I don't want to make changes to the constitution based on "gee it might work". (n/t)

Frosty January 23, 2013 12:31PM

There has been no proposed changed to the constitution, chicken little.

JimmyDean January 24, 2013 12:21AM

You've convinced me you're a fucking retard who shouldn't be allowed a computer or telephone.

Frosty January 24, 2013 09:54AM

That pigeon holing is your failure, not anyone else's.

Matrik January 24, 2013 06:13AM

I'm with Materk here.

Should we remove sights/scopes from guns too? Not knowing where the bullet will go would be more effective then smaller magazines, don't you think?

I feel similarly in terms of upside downside.

Batman January 23, 2013 08:47AM

I think the effort expended on magazines etc..

istirith January 23, 2013 08:59AM

This I agree with

JimmyDean January 23, 2013 09:10AM

I should have been a little more unambiguous I guess.

istirith January 23, 2013 09:38AM

B-but if THINK it's a band-aid, isn't that what matters!

Batman January 23, 2013 09:40AM

Cho reloaded quite a bit.

RobDarken January 23, 2013 08:06AM

In my opinion we have more than enough children to spare.

RobDarken January 23, 2013 07:46AM

I agree with you, not exactly but generally speaking same page. +1 my good man. (n/t)

Yeah, I'm pretty much with you on all of those.
