1) I'd suggest a bard. Good (not great) fighting skills, songs with magic-like effects (healing, area damage, maledictions, utility), and scrolls/staves for extended preparations.

2) Empowerment is hardly "begging" if done right. As a recent tattoo-ee of Cyradia, I can assure you that some IMMs despise begging, on the contrary. But yes, it's a challenge. And it should be.
