There are many different ways to go about it. Let's say you want to go kill some elves. Ask a warrior if you can hire him, then slide him a few silvers. Ask if he hates elves. Ask if he needs another set of eyes while he trains. Ask if he's single.

As long as you transmit the gist (I'd like to join you, for whatever reason) you should be understood.
