not too big a deal here

don't think too much about it.

The basic format goes something like.

"Greetings, would you like some company?"
"Greetings, would you care to gain some ranks?"

But this is prone to all sorts of different answers - no in this instance may mean I'm busy, it may mean I'm busy ranking with your mortal enemies, it may mean I want to gain levels but not with you cause you're my enemy, it may mean I don't want to gain levels, period, cause I'm a levelsitting little bitch... etc.

a more cautious route would be feeling them out for their affiliations first:

"Greetings, what path do you walk?"

and then if they're compatible, ask them to join you. Most people will state their affiliations right away: almost every lightwalker should answer it properly, and almost every villager too: it'd mostly be bad RP on their parts if they didn't announce to the world that they liked good people/liked to kill magi. Imperials have their affiliations tacked onto their titles. Outlanders, Scions, and Nexuns generally have more leeway to be cagey about their affiliation. In the end it usually isn't a big deal, and most people will tell you their affiliations if you volunteer information about yourself, first, and then ask them about themselves.

Some fancier examples, which involves you giving away information about align/affiliation and requesting the same in return:

"One who walks in the Light seeks company. What say you?"

"Join me and we shall slay some elves/random-lightwalker-mob in the Vale/Plains/wherever." Careful with tossing in too much information, though, you might be telegraphing favored ranking spots to enemies and the like.

"Dark deeds beckon. How will you answer?"

"I hear some of these pissant dwarves in akan have been talking trash about us, let's go smash their heads in"

"X and I are planning an expedition into the Mausoleum, to purge it of its undead infestation. Interested?"

"Me and pet hamster boo smash soldier skulls in battlefield. You join. Much fun."

Also, if you have an ally in your range, you can ask that person for opinions or information on your various group candidates, too.
