Warning: I don't know a ton about D&D type races, so I'm not sure if a race idea is out there that fits this mold already. Maybe something reptilian?
It seems to me that most races fit into one of two buckets....
strong and dumb (the extreme being giants)
fast and smart (think elves and arials)
and I'd like to see these two things decoupled...so that you have something that's strong, intelligent, but slow.
I think we have enough edge and legacy richness in the game to make intelligence worth something, even above and beyond practicing up your skills, when playing a melee class. I"m not recommending a smart giant class, because giants have other bonuses like size and weapon resistance, etc. Not to mention that the slowness in practicing seems to be part of their balancing (which I think is a shame, but a different can of worms).
There just seems to be a hole for a race that is slow in reflexes (low dex), but strong as an ox (still soft and normal skin) and smart (though not necessarily wise). I would also decouple con and str...just bc you hit like a train doesn't mean you're super hearty (like felars, but in reverse). Something that would have stats:
Strong (23-24) Really Strong
Intell (23) Really Smart
Wis (18-20) Average Wisdom
Dex (17-18) Poor Agility
Con (18-20) Average Con
