Giving a player the option of paying to "catch up" is the point

The problem with CF (or one of them) is the time sink. It's a PK-based MUD. So, you spend time learning PK, preps, gear, etc. all so you have a good chance at killing people you come across. Most of the time, if you're like me, you get steamrolled because most of the people playing this game have been playing it for years. How do you level the playing field? Well, I suppose you too can play for years or at least spend hours learning every facet of the game. Or, if you don't have years to put in a game -- and I wager most people don't -- you could have the option of paying to reduce the time spent, just a bit.

I think of Battlefield (the shoot-em-up). Players have the option of forking over $50(?) for the Premium package, which unlocks areas and weapons that you would have otherwise had to unlock by scoring points over time in the game. I admit that I don't like dying to a Premium player especially when the dude wastes me with a gun that takes a huge amount of time to unlock. However, I do feel good wasting a Premium player and knowing that my skill made the difference, not his insta-set of guns and gear. Also, when I see those Premium players, I have to say I respect that they loved the game/want to win so badly that they paid extra on top of the price of the game. I wouldn't, but I respect that. Either way, I like that you can play Premium or not and still have a blast. The two types of players co-exist.

That's why, in CF's case, if some player paid to have his character start at 30, with 75% skills and other gimps, I wouldn't really mind. That's his choice to pay that money and avoid having to rank, find groups, etc. Maybe some players want to just get in, tear stuff up, and get out. I see a lot of people running around trying to PK at 30-40, so I think this is a good starting point -- hypothetically -- for such an option. Again, I understand if this is against the "spirit" of things, but I do think we have to at least consider even knee-jerk bad ideas if we're going to help this game at all.

Idea to help CF: Pay to Play (Advanced)

smashtro May 16, 2013 09:58AM

Pay to play = no need for empowerment. I would PAY! n/t

smfii May 17, 2013 01:27PM

I think new players can be attracted with being forced to spend money

jklua May 16, 2013 07:24PM

I like the bigger pk range.

Batman May 17, 2013 01:58AM

You don't need to pay for perks, just take a pic of "yourself" and send it to a certain Imm. Hell, pre picked third legacy before you even roll. Why spend money. (n/t)

NbM(VIP) May 16, 2013 02:32PM

Scarabaeus? n/t

jalim May 16, 2013 03:11PM

my main problem with this: giving money to the people who run the game.

satchmo May 16, 2013 01:37PM

at least he is trying, CF is Convulsing on the ground.

marcos May 16, 2013 01:09PM

It's good that people are trying, but you have to balance attracting people versus repulsing them when discussing changes

Giving a player the option of paying to "catch up" is the point

smashtro May 16, 2013 02:39PM

All video games are time sinks.

istirith May 16, 2013 10:09PM

oh I am not saying that this Terribad idea is good.

marcos May 16, 2013 01:43PM

I'd quit playing if CF added perks for pay. (n/t)

Dalbrin May 16, 2013 12:32PM

Dislike.

Forsooth May 16, 2013 11:16AM

Horrible

zoskia May 16, 2013 11:27AM

I honestly think more people get discouraged because they hero under 100 hours, have no idea how their character works (or just haven't had time to get some 100%s) and delete. (n/t)

sevriis May 16, 2013 12:41PM

I'll admit this happens to me.

Dalbrin May 16, 2013 12:46PM

Illegal - it violates the terms+conditions under which the base mud code may be used...

Nurok May 16, 2013 11:05AM

Link or language? Curious. (n/t) (n/t)

smashtro May 16, 2013 12:03PM

Very easy to find.

wrathpuppet May 16, 2013 12:09PM

And this refers or more than likely refers to the code and not CF as a game.

msolzheim May 16, 2013 01:35PM

Donations to support a non-profit vs for profit. Depends on the corp. n/t (n/t)

msolzheim May 16, 2013 01:29PM

so paying for PBFs (and the dikumud-generated information they provide) is different because...?

smashtro May 16, 2013 12:28PM

Also that stuff is pulled from databases which were not supported in the original diku code (n/t)

Quas May 16, 2013 01:04PM

No they don't

Quas May 16, 2013 01:03PM

The codes rule is that anyone can use it if they never try to charge to play, so no nononononono no no (n/t)

Zheeser May 16, 2013 11:02AM

Not what the license says. N/T (n/t)

msolzheim May 16, 2013 01:39PM

Pay to Play or Pay to Prosper are antithetical to what CF is. So, no. Not ever. Ever. (n/t)

sevriis May 16, 2013 10:57AM

I'd rather this was not implemented.
