I'd endorse starting with it if you're new to linux. It installs fairly easily and has decent support via documentation and forums. The sudo command still makes me laugh, but it arguably has it's benefits- if you use Ubuntu you'll understand this comic: <A href=http://xkcd.com/149/>[
xkcd.com];. That always makes me laugh.
There are other free distros out there- Fedora (I like it) and Slackware (meh) which I've used, but I think Ubuntu is the trendiest thing now. Which is good, because it means you'll find more support for it, and your hardware will (hopefully) work with it (fuck hacking drivers).
Edit: One thing to keep in mind if you're gonna run linux- I've learned this the hard way- if you have a choice: stick with IDE drives (CD/DVD, hard drives) as opposed to SATA/USB drives. The linux drivers are not always up to snuff yet for those. Cheers.
