A Bay Area reporter who went down there to see what was what...

I experienced hate first hand today.
It came from these people dressed in all black at a protest in Berkeley.
Ironically they were all chanting about NO hate.
Some had shields and gloves.
Some had helmets.
Some had gas masks.
I was watching them and taking it all in.
I came there on my own time.
Because I wanted to see things first hand.
I was dressed in shorts and a tank top.
At one point I took out my phone to take a picture.
And that's when it all happened.
(And just to be clear they were playing for the cameras in front but I was toward the back. And since there were already so many people taking their picture I didn't think it would be an issue.)
I took these two pictures and afterward they started screaming at me.
I thought for sure they were going to attack.
I was just waiting for it.
But I stayed calm even though I thought this may not end well for me.
Here's how the conversation went.
And as you're reading this keep in mind that they were yelling at me and their words were filled with venom, anger, hate and intolerance.
There's just no other way to describe it.
I was stunned.
Hey! No pictures or we'll take your phone!!!
(At that point I'd already taken these shots)
Me (In calm voice):
You're on public property and I can take a picture if I want to.
Oh so you're a big man with a camera?
No I just wanted to take a picture and talk with you.
Them (rushing toward me):
We outnumber you and we will take your camera!
You're not going to take my camera and you're not going to tell me what to do.
Why can't we just have a respectful conversation.
(I then touched one of them on her hand to say it's okay I just want to talk)
Don't touch me!!
I'm not trying to do anything.
I just want to try to understand and have a respectful conversation.
We'll block your shot!!!
That's fine.
All I wanted to do was have a conversation.
Now is not the time.
(In fairness he was the one person who was respectful)
Then as I started to walk away a woman started screaming at me saying:
We're not interested in talking to you!!
We're not interested in talking to you!!
I walked away stunned.
I grew up in Berkeley.
I marched in anti-war protests during the sixties.
Its one thing to read about HATE
It's another thing to be right next to it.
In my opinion, these people dressed in black are just as hateful and intolerant as the people they are protesting against.
Afterward I was talking to several other protesters.
(Not dressed in black)
One of them actually stood up for me as the people dressed in black were threatening me.
I was touched.
They were just as disappointed as I was.
They said that the people dressed in black represent a small minority and that they "hijack" the protests.
And I agree.
MOST of the people out there today in Berkeley were non-violent.
They were there for the cause.
They just wanted to come out and stand up against hate.
I totally support them.
But I do not support extremists, whether they are on the right or the left.
Hate is hate.
And I experienced it first hand today.
It was sad to see.

What is really scary is how much of a game changer the internet is. Imagine if you had this press skew in reporting and no internet? Wew.

If you're willing to be labeled as a christian, why would you fear being labeled as a racist?

Stevers August 30, 2017 04:15PM

Equating slavery in the Bible to racism today?

PaulO August 31, 2017 09:12AM

If you can't make sense of a simple minded creature like me, what are you doing trying to make sense of life with a big ol complicated book?

Stevers August 31, 2017 11:11AM

That's not racism

Kstatida August 31, 2017 12:17AM

I was implying that racism isn't worse than christianity, so it's funny that he is so open to being labeled as one but not the other. In fact, Christianity is probably the ultimate form of discrimination

Stevers August 31, 2017 06:21AM

That's exactly how I talk and act. You nailed it. /sarcasm (n/t)

PaulO August 31, 2017 09:22AM

The only thing getting nailed here

Stevers August 31, 2017 10:54AM

Oh silly you

Kstatida August 31, 2017 11:50AM

My mistake. Let's continue this conversation on the Faith board. n/t

Stevers August 31, 2017 12:01PM

That's nearly all religions, you twit. To assume all christians take it that litteral is ignorant. don't be ignorant.

Frosty August 31, 2017 06:44AM

Since when did christians stop talking heaven and hell literally?

Stevers August 31, 2017 08:09AM

I'm not going to waste my time counting them for you. I'd rather waste my time linking awesome hilarious videos that you hipsters won't click on because it's not in old english font.

Frosty August 31, 2017 08:58AM

Nice response. You really backed up your unfounded claims by attacking an unrelated comment and dismissing responsibility by pretending like you don't care that I don't watch your videos. n/t

Stevers August 31, 2017 11:36AM

Dante is not the Bible.

PaulO August 31, 2017 08:58AM

Dante isn't, but Matthew, Malachi, Jude, and Mark have something to say about this.

Stevers August 31, 2017 11:33AM

Thank you.

PaulO August 31, 2017 12:29PM

And herein lies one of my biggest issues with the bible and its interpretations.

Stevers August 31, 2017 12:54PM

Even if God is not the fire, and there is to be a literal fire, it still will burn up and destroy, according to the Bible (n/t)

PaulO September 06, 2017 03:33AM

Damn Paul. You're a bad ass. (n/t)

Matrik August 31, 2017 12:35PM

Ass in the bible means donkey. Your beast of burden.

Flipside Oreo September 03, 2017 10:00AM

Paul is not a bad ass.

Stevers August 31, 2017 12:40PM

Someone sounds jelly. (n/t)

Matrik August 31, 2017 12:42PM

Thing is, christianity doesn't mind it
