1) He voted for the Iraq war
2) He is buddy buddy with Jerry Falwell, the guy who said Americans deserved 9/11 for sinning
3) He hopes to appoint SCOTUS justices who will overturn Roe vs. Wade
4) After originally opposing the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy, he did an about face and started sucking the party cock so he could get support for the nomination. (I personally am only concerned about the 'death tax')
5) He's softened his stance/rhetoric against torture based on party pressure
This is pretty much a list of why you wouldn't like any mainstream Republican. Not McCain in particular. McCain is probably less buddy buddy w/ Falwell than the majority of Republicans would be, and certainly less so than a Huckabee or a Paul. Or a Romney or Thompson, for that matter. About the only mainstream Republican candidate who might get along worse with Falwell than McCain is Giuliani. McCain may have softened his stance on torture (I haven't researched it), but hey...how many Republicans had a semi-staunch anti-toture stance to begin with?
One of the reasons why I liked Ron Paul is that he was different on at least a few of these issues. He was also the only Republican that refused to support amending the United States Constitution to prohibit gay marriages. On a personal level, that is a deal breaker for me with regard to any other Republican candidate. Anyone that would seriously propose altering the document intended to preserve our legal rights and obligations to maintain those rights so that it would exclude a certain segment from enjoying the same liberties as other Americans does not see "America" in the same manner that I do.
