Between commercial elements and the public scientific community. It boiled down to the commercial element wanting to patent the entire genome. Luckily the public element won by a matter of hours if I remember and it wasn't patented.

But to put that in perspective, any time anyone wanted to use the genome, which would be often, they'd need to pay this one individual royalties. He'd have become an overnight multi-millionaire.

Keep in mind, just because you can get a patent doesn't necessarily mean that patent will hold up in court. And yes, it's silly. nt
