But those are entitlement program problems. Toll on the rest of us? I hate this argument. It's the same argument some people use when discussing seatbelt and helmet laws, "Oh, if you get your brain scrambled the rest of us are going to have to pay for it." Screw that. Nobody should pay for me if I'm irresponsible and retarded. The system of handouts and security nets needs to go. It's an ever increasing web of entanglement wanting to control more and more of my life so I can't negatively impact the ever increasing system of entitlements. "Oh, we can't let people make decisions for themselves, because if they screw up it's going to burden the system."
But you know what? You're the problem. You're re-enforcing irresponsibility and stupidity. You're encouraging it. Let people fuck up. Let them learn from their mistakes. If they don't learn from their mistakes, or if they resort to real crimes against others, let them suffer the consequences and be a lesson for the next generation. A real and stark lesson about what happens to people who screw up and don't act responsibly.
These mothering laws only serve to keep people child-like and prevent them from ever really growing up, thinking for themselves, and being responsible adults. You're creating the very behavior you abhor.
What really annoys me is when people like you, who think you know what is best for everyone else, are 100% wrong on an issue. You pass some law based on incorrect information then use the police and courts to break up families and ruin people's lives for going against your unjust law.
The metropolitan area of NYC is nothing like rural country living. Run out of resources? There's plenty of fertile land around where I live that could support lots of people with lots of kids. You're talking about two entirely different worlds, and they don't need the same laws and oversight. If you want to live in Brooklyn and only have one kid, fine. However, if my next door neighbor (a mile away) wants to have a huge family with lots of wives and dozens of kids and has no problem supporting them, who are you to tell him otherwise?
And let's assume for a minute that "the people" are too stupid and irresponsible. Do you think giving them more power in the government as police, politicians, and administrators is a good idea? I don't think people are, but I really don't see your logic in doing that.
Finally, if you could have your way, what punishment would you give people for breaking your laws? If someone did decide to have more than one child, what would you want done to that family? What if they refuse to cooperate? Do you think it is a fair and just treatment for their "crime"?
