A question for the US folks.

Just curious. Anyone tried to get or know someone who tried to get health insurance with a pre-existing condition? For example for having something non-lethal such as ulcerative colitis. I've only heard horror stories but would be interested in more real life experiences. How much would it cost you aprox?
