Rangers are a stupid class. I like the idea of playing one, but the realities of literally sitting in the wilds hoping for a person to stumble into you unprepared isn't any fun.
The thing that frightens an orc about ranger isn't whether they wield a staff or not. Their wilderness fighting is going to trump yours anyway, regardless of weapon. The thing that sucks is orcs have high wimpy. So if they get you to wimpy on an ambush into a snare, you are pretty well fucked. Very few things can survive two ambushes and even prepped orc isn't really one of them assuming remotely equal abilities for both parties.
That said, killing rangers in the wilds is so immensely satisfying. Here is the deal. Get stoneskin, get a slave, wield maces, taunt Ranger in wilds, fallback first action after ambush, bash bash bash.
Seriously it is that simple. As a Shigru your natural dam redux from berserk will generally mean any staff wielding ranger (aren't they all?) ambush won't do enough damage to really put you in jeopardy. If you have a slave handy (which you do, because you are prepared) it is a simple matter to fallback and bash. Sure they might have sure footing and get away. Sure you might have to vary some and grapple once in a while. Sure it will be harder to have enough dam redux as a non-Shigru to shrug off the first ambush, but it is doable, and if you make ambush not scary, fighting a ranger in the wilds becomes an easy proposition.
Also, if you get surprised, flee and quaff and hope you don't hit a well placed snare.
AFAIK there are no Light attack type staffs, which seems like a sane balance decision. On the off chance that a Ranger gets smart and realizes ambush is how ranger kills people, your options are probably limited to running away and finding them outside the wilds or bringing other forces into play.
One small note that Krunk fought wood-elf bedoiun explorer? Rhyme a lot (drawing a blank on name) and that bastard was tough even on roads. No idea what the deal was there exactly, but I suspect a great many preps. That said, it only takes a few lucky rounds and some good bashing to end a ranger in civilized, where a ranger can't keep anything from running away, so there wasn't very much real danger of death, just a lot of lost slaves and chugged blood.
