If he's smart, his ambush will have no lag. He can lag himself after for a round even (say insects) and still be able to redirect immediately when you fallback.
So this doesn't really work.

If you have a slave handy (which you do, because you are prepared) it is a simple matter to fallback and bash.

Same. Smart opponent will not lag himself vs you and will anticipate fallback. If your pet is a problem, he will let you land in snare,
deal with the pet and then deal with you. Orc with no pet is a dead orc :-)

Sure they might have sure footing and get away. Sure you might have to vary some and grapple once in a while. Sure it will be harder to have enough dam redux as a non-Shigru to shrug off the first ambush, but it is doable, and if you make ambush not scary, fighting a ranger in the wilds becomes an easy proposition.

Shigru with perfected masochism is tough to nail, because he can easily cancel snare lag.
All other adaptations are pretty much guaranteed kills in the wilderness, to a ranger that knows what orcs do.
