How to time your approach/strike

So you found a group out ranking, one or more of them is in PK range and is an enemy of yours. Do you just prep up and go in as soon as you're prepped? Do you somehow time your attacks more intelligently than that?

For me it depends greatly on how well I know the area they are in.

Depend on the enemy and my current character. If I have a fire giant sword or storm sword spec or a shaman or paladin. I'd prep up and rush in. Tranny/thief/assassin I'd watch a bit. (n/t)
