prep before you start to hunt, not after you find prey

For most builds (those without concealment abilities) you get the best results against ranking groups by hitting them before they have a chance to organize. The best way to do that is to be ready to "pull the trigger" the moment you spot them.

The more off guard you catch them the more likely they are to make a mistake and wind up as a corpse.

Even as a concealment class I tend to hunt prepped just because windows of opportunity can often be narrow and you want to be ready to exploit them when they occur.

As a villager your prep is generally making sure you have enough mv points to chase a victim or make a retreat and are able to cross terrain to do so (aka pop seaweed before a fight if you might chase/flee across/under water). For example if I think a group is ranking in the forest of nowhere I might camp out in Midgaard until I am 90% mv before poking my head in to check.

How to time your approach/strike

For me it depends greatly on how well I know the area they are in.

Depend on the enemy and my current character. If I have a fire giant sword or storm sword spec or a shaman or paladin. I'd prep up and rush in. Tranny/thief/assassin I'd watch a bit. (n/t)
