There's no doubt a position in the middle east has tactical value, but the US still stands waaaay ahead on being the biggest Oil guzzler in the world. So heavily relient on oil that even if what you state is true, that they depend largely on sources 'not middle east', they just can't sustain themselves without OPEC countries. Moving into the middle east sounds like it has more to do with securing a personal supply than cutting off other peoples. Even China doesn't consume near as much as the US - and they've already made moves away from heading into the same infrastructure as they've developed. Although the larger part of this is to do with how their economy is structed as a whole around a decentralised communist government - allowing them remarkable efficiency when it comes to the basics such a transport and logistics.
