The point here is to tax the profits, not the net sales. Therefore, their ability to pay the wages of those everyone else is not in danger. Yes, it does hurt rich people's ability to get even richer, but that's an acceptable price for getting the money for goverment's required operations without burdening the people who can't afford it as well.
