Sorry, our posts keep disappearing. Forgive me if I'm missing something it's hard to keep track of what's going on.
I think you implied I ruled out Pk or RP in the mechanics of Carrionfields. That was not my intention - I replied to a post saying there should be no Secrets. I said Exploration and especially Mystery was integral, and pointed out the imms method was attempt of rewarding it mechanically should be scrapped. Exploration XP doesn't work. My example was the door in the Violet Woods that leads to the secret Pond. The pond adds nothing yet reaching it is an incredible feat. So many people have spent hours tugging at the random levers/buttons there to find only the scroll shop.
Your reply seemed to be a suggestion to reward RP more mechanically by opening it to a point score as well. I'm not sure if you understand what I wrote - here follows an extrapolation that might clarify:
I have to point out first as it helps my argument - you are a good player. You've had some great death threads. You are one of those gentlemen I thought might understand - isn't recognition from fellow players reward enough for good roleplay? Good PK? Why is it a game of basketball, with point records everyone needs to beat?
Entitlement is the big reason why. People feel self entitled - that they deserve recognition for their Scores. They ding the ceiling bell 5 times and should get a Quest Skill for it. They are jealous of the authors of these mechanics because they don't need to ring the bell. This is perceived as cheating because to some the points are their objective.
I have contributed years of my life to research and answering questions on Game Mechanics and Lore. Hundreds of hours have gone into building and maintaining the QHCF WIki. I've designed rooms and items for the game itself. Do I want points for that? No. Do I deserve a kick ass unique race/class combo? Maybe. But I would never ask for one. I don't believe I'm entitled to jack shit.
It was rewarding just to be contributing to something good and fun. That's what an EXPERIENCE is - it's not experience points. It's something that changed you as a person. Few other games have achieved this on a scale that Carrionfields has and it didn't need a point system to do it. Just a violent fantasy and lots of people to disagree with. The more you try to add 'automation' and 'points' the more you are detracting from the heart of the game. To Socially Roleplay, To Explore Mysteries and to Player Kill - then Die and start over. Replace the 'Kill' with 'Mudsex0r' if you're an Acolyte. Or Batman. In conclusion - this is a social game that rewards social competence. If you don't play well with others you probably won't win at it. It's not surprise the vitriolic members of this forum are forever losing and being punished - because they're terrible players as well. A move toward trying to make the game less social and more mechanical is going to kill it further. If people feel they aren't being represented on the staff then they need to Man Up and join it.
As a closing note, irregardless of my own opinion on your idea - it's really nice to see you're still making an effort to make the game better. I truly respect that desire. I hope others do too and help you implement it. You should consider putting the work into being an Imm if you want to contribute more. If I ever come back to the game, I'd love to see how your ideas turn out.
