Perhaps our definitions conflict, then.

As far as I'm aware, someone who is a theist is someone who explicitly professes belief in God or a series of Gods, defined as a single all-powerful creator being or a group of all-powerful creator beings.

It is possible to be a theist without being Christian or believing in the bible, but if that is the case it seems to be a rather illogical position, since without religious script behind you, you have about the same amount of evidence for an all-powerful creator being (or group of creator beings) as you have for an invisible pink unicorn.

Now, if you defined theism as believing in aliens or the possibility of beings that live on different planes of existence that may be superior to us, then I can see and agree with that - I would find it exceedingly difficult to believe that earth was the only planet in a place the size of our universe to have developed sapient life, and that sapient life was limited only to things our sensory system can comprehend. I would also consider it very unlikely that we are the most advanced civilization in the universe. In that case, any civilization more developed than us would almost certainly be considered "superior" beings.

Since there is nothing remotely related to religion or creator beings or anything remotely like an established religion, I would not define someone who believes in them as a "theist" at all.

I don't think that's a theistic statement of any kind - if there was a secret colony of humans on alpha centauri that had far more advanced technology and civilization than anyone on earth, I would not consider them gods of any sort, either, though I would consider them "superior beings" and "higher powers". Thus, accepting their existence, though they may be higher powers, would not necessarily make me a theist. Similarly, although warlords in the Democratic Republic of Congo might accept the United States as being a "higher power" I don't think any of them would be considered theists for doing so.

We can do things now that 2,000 years ago were completely impossible and unimaginable - fly across oceans, construct enormous buildings, instantaneously converse with people on the other side of the world. We are certainly higher powers than our ancestors, but we are certainly not gods.

Any of you who don't believe in(aka understand) evolution watch Cosmos this week?

ORB March 20, 2014 06:34AM

I believe in evolution...

Death_Claw March 21, 2014 11:38AM

Have you looked at the evidence for religion?

vortexmagus March 29, 2014 09:27AM

I never said I believed in the bible.

Death_Claw March 31, 2014 04:51AM

Perhaps our definitions conflict, then.

Agnosticism speaks against scripture as evidence. (n/t)

DurNominator(VIP) April 03, 2014 06:58AM

Just for fun

PaulO March 31, 2014 06:08PM

It's certainly an interesting idea

vortexmagus April 01, 2014 12:36AM

Watching you talk about your ideas of logic is like reading a Scrumbul post on game balance. Long, boring, and not much is really said. (n/t)

Matrik March 29, 2014 04:02PM

It's quite simple really

Rade March 24, 2014 06:08PM

It goes a bit deeper than that...

Death_Claw March 25, 2014 05:00AM

There are forms of spirituality that don't involve fantasy or gods

Reposted from Reddit (not my words): Why do people think the same standard of truth we apply to everything else doesn't apply to religion?

vortexmagus March 31, 2014 03:28AM

I agree fully, with elaboration!

Lao Tzu does it better and Best...

Matrik April 03, 2014 08:25AM

This is a bad question. What is the "standard of truth" for which everyone shares? People will bicker on what "truth" actually means, despite the 'truth' being quite simple.

Srev March 31, 2014 09:51AM

actually that reddit post was one of the best analogies I have ever read on the topic

Quas March 31, 2014 11:19AM

Yes, and you're the world's best hub for analogies on the topic.

Hey look guys, another Zeathiest. As dangerous to science as religion. (n/t)

Your view of it seems backwards, and I can understand the apparent offense you take.

I don't think it is attacking religion, at least not outrightly.

PaulO March 24, 2014 10:18AM

Anyone who doesn't understand it already isn't going to. The lines are drawn and those with blind faith in Jebus are already on their side. (n/t)

Doof March 20, 2014 01:28PM

I just don't understand why having faith in a religion means you have to not believe in evolution. (n/t)

chuntog March 20, 2014 04:55PM

That was kind of my point.

Matrik March 20, 2014 05:40PM

I don't understand it, either. I blame Jebus. (n/t)

Doof March 20, 2014 02:12PM

it doesn't. there are plenty of people (foremost, Francis Collins, leader of the HGP) who believe in both

morocco March 20, 2014 01:59PM

It's not. It's a consistency and logic thing.

vortexmagus March 29, 2014 09:09AM

Did you really? It's a dumbass thing, not a political thing. (n/t)

Doof March 20, 2014 02:14PM

i'm not saying it's not dumb, but the justification is usually, ultimately political (n/t)
