I didn't vote for Trump. My initial take on Trump is, "this guy has no clue what working class is and he's a con artist".
That being said, he's mostly done right by the people who did vote for them. And I think he's pretty light on lynchings and all the drama he's accused of. I like him a lot more now than I did previously and I intend on voting for him in 2020.
If you want to know why people voted for him you should talk to the people who voted for him and ask. There's several deeply unpopular things in America that Trump platforms on.
1) People generally don't like when folks are rewarded for breaking the law. The idea of not enforcing our immigration laws rubs most people the wrong way and rightfully so. If you want open borders, pass that into law, but otherwise rule of law needs to be evenly and fairly enforced.
2) Political correctness and thought policing and cancel culture all fly in the face of our value on freedom of speech and peaceful political debate. I don't have to like what you say but you're allowed to say it and I shouldn't try to intimidate you into silence.
3) Trickle down economics works, we know it works, but we also know if the labor part of the equation is overseas what you get is a huge gap in wealth. So when we do trickle down economics with a huge trade deficit to China, then the money gets split between the elite here and the Chinese and the average American citizen's only benefit is cheaper phones, TVs and toothpaste. Lot of people think this is a rotten trade and would like to see the government care more about protecting labor in America.
4) The Democrats offered exactly nothing to middle America. Minimum wage promises aren't compelling enough as they come with increased unemployment anyway. People don't want guaranteed minimum wage they want abundance of job opportunities.
When the media takes above and conflates it with racism and calls tens of millions of American voters racist..honestly they're being short sighted, ignorant and offensive. Most of the swing state voters who voted for Trump also voted for Obama.
