If your kids remember that their dad self-sacrificially worked at a job he hated in order to provide for them...that's a good memory to have. Especially if you're also electing to use your free time, which you may have precious little of, to spend with them on stuff like camping and fishing.
I could not disagree more with this.
Kids learn by example. If you slave away at a job you hate, don't be surprised if in 20 years they end up doing the same.
Further, unhappiness is contagious. If you're miserable, you will make your wife and kids miserable. It's either that or hide your misery for years, and I don't believe anyone has the capability to do that.
I don't think you should outright quit your job - unless you have money put by - but I think you should start looking for a new one. You don't have a right to a high-paying job or even a job you enjoy, but you do have a right to one that doesn't make you hate yourself each morning. You need to provide for your family, and that includes the emotional as well as the material.
