I, for one, am certain that climate change is happening, and I'm largely convinced that
human CO2 emissions are a major source of it. I'm not completely convinced because
there's no smoking gun to speak of, but as far as I'm concerned, to disagree with a
majority of climatologists and other scientists is to take the side of fools.
But what I've never understood is that for any individual cutting personal carbon emissions
can only result in personal monetary gain, yet some folks are hell-bent on not doing it.
Why?
When my girlfriend got all up in arms about GW I took my ammeter and measured the
power consumption of every single device in our apartment. By putting things that draw
power even when "off," on power strips ,switching over to only CFLs and by insulating
our apartment to the gills we were able to cut our electric bill by over 30%!
Independent of any sort of climate-crisis, that's a few hundred dollars a year for us. That
means that we can eat hibachi a few more times every year! That's win!
Yet when the topic comes up I find a reluctance among people to take even these simple
steps, despite the fact that doing these things results in more hibachi dinners. I just don't
understand people, which is probably why I spend so much goddamn time playing CF.
