You're fine with taking something away if people have other options. Similar, I might take away your right to own cars, but not bikes. Or your right to speak freely, except you could still use the interbutts. Or your right to XYZ but you can still ABC. Alternatives on simply the basis of "alternative" mean nothing to me, otherwise they are far too broad like those I could continue mentioning forever more. It entirely does eventually come down to preference, as in what makes us feel secure - and we just differ on that.
" --I think by disarming people you enhance everyones freedom to express their ideas(especially controvetial ones) and the ability to feel secure in public places. "
Especially by enhancing the freedom of a criminal to have me at a disadvantage. Just kidding, that's dramatic. I don't think it does what you think though. I'm not scared of guns. I'm scared of crazy people who, no matter the laws, will get their hands on dangerous things and use them against me. We have different fears too. (Spiders)
Having a police officer around is nice.
Sadly they can't be everywhere all the time. I also DO NOT want them everywhere all the time. Weber talked a bit about how the enforcement or presence of "law" as a physical representative is somewhat oppressive on the minds of those who are nearby - since law then is a bit coercive (NOT IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE!) - so the ever-present idea is a turnoff to me, similar to how I wouldn't want cameras fucking everywhere. But again, that's preference.
Then, let's say it comes to home safety. I have no officers nearby to protect me. They are asleep at their own houses, or patrolling far away. My house is entered and I am in danger, as is my child and my uncle tom - yet I have no weapon with which to defend myself easily. Wat do? I find that interaction to be fixed by have a weapon at your home. While guns may be spooky, a crazy dude who wants to rape your butt 24/7 is spookier (2spooky4me).
Even then, I wouldn't want the police disarmed. Weapons are a good thing. Criminals are a bad thing.
But yeah, I'd chalk the fundamental difference here down to preference of control vs freedom. We just have different ideas of how people should be able to be. I like the more left alone. You like them less armed. Both are cool, but obviously mine is better because I agree with it, thus you are hitler.
