I peruse the forums from time to time and I'm glad to see CF is still alive. I still prefer Eastern Road when it was only 5 rooms wide, but still love the game regardless even though I haven't played a real character since my berserker rager bard :)
Quick idea regarding bolstering the player count.
Since there are so many amazing stories with roles and the history of CF, etc. Why
..I honestly dont think it would take a great deal to convince myself and others to come back. I just think its far late in the game to un-jade the players who have left and moved on (not reading the forums). The immortals really need to interact with players as necessary parts of the machine rather then disposable refuse.
The immortals also made one catastrophic mistake in that they took some
tesseract - better version of the conjie spell
transform - gave extra hp which was based on hp then became based on % of mana
brew - make random potions
mana transfer - slight damage to give another master mana
mental knife - good direct damage
scourge - area fireball with a chance to blind weaken and/or poison
pretty nasty altogether but a good yin to the yang of ragers.
..I loved being competitive but I had a hard time towards the end of my playing days justifying the time spent spamming. I guess the monotony more then anything killed my enjoyment of the game.
Hopefully the barriers to entry will be reduced soon so old farts like myself can make it back haha.

..and Im sure a ton more but mentoring was a bit easier back in the day haha. I was a super newb rager thief and used to hang out with Shadow all the time. Ito Forsythe Magog some ninja in masters made amazing enemies. Good times. Simple but immersive.

..but he was also a bit overpowered. The liches of that time that took advantage of black diamond phylacteries were pretty much unstoppable.
As to the rest of your note, I'm sure it's viable that a lack of graphics has hurt CF's appeal, but people are reading books of this genre at a far more increased pace and this sort of immersive experience should be easily palatable to them
..I've been lurking for a bit, but thought this thread was excellent in that it expressed the juxtaposing opinions. Now, I'm not saying FSV is good or bad, but it does seem to be a necessary evil for casual players who want to compete without a large disadvantage.
I've said this in the past, but I really think CF needs to return to its roots. Take away perks of all kinds and lev
..fun times. I have a house, a wife, two dogs, but I still miss that text based erection from time to time. Thank god the Immortals keep the game so damn info-centric or I might actually try another come back character. What is SMUG and the Jhybrian up to these days?

It's a simple equation. CF is exponentially more fun with more players. When boredom and monotony starts outweighing fun, you lose players. When barriers to entry are to high, you don't make those players up in new players. The other site is helping cf by keeping people around and reducing barriers to entry. In a perfect world, it wouldn't be necessary but I personally don't s
..in the far long ago, when CF had a gigantic player base, there were a good number of great players and a good number of piss-poor players. The great players were given titles and sometimes tattoos, but nothing beyond that. Now, this seems to not incentive being a good player, but what it do, was make sure the playing field was even. If I beat you, it was with my own two hands and intellect, not
Zharradam had it and I had to fight both him and Arolin while I had Baldur. It was basically a juiced up lion who could rake with permanent displacement on it. It was good that I was an arial bard who could keep displacement on myself and had deathblow =) Ahh, the good days.

..the funny thing is that after playing the game for as long as they have, I can't imagine why the immortals wouldn't want to prove their abilities with a character who gets zero perks. I do appreciate how Twist generally talks about his characters after he's done with them, but I would hope they would as you posted register themselves and want the other immortals to leave them alo
..I haven't played in a few years either, but I remember seeing you traverse through the ranks and I thought you were going to be the one who saved CF =) but alas 1 man can only do so much. You really did your best and that's all we could ask from you. From Trilvain to Zinla to all of the many players we got to play together, I will always call you a friend. Good luck in life sir.

..but there came a time when the Immortal staff stopped interacting with the players and I feel really lost touch. The Immortals at that time didn't really care about retaining players and acted a bit rashly alienating quite a few people.
There was also a feeling of watching over your shoulder while playing thus making it extremely difficult to bring friends in to the game. This was the r
..this is your escape and it pains you to see people talking about it in a negative manner, but I can't believe you'd be willing to see it sink in to the abyss rather then discuss some rational changes to the game. I know you have a strong opinion, but you have to see and hear what others have to say as well.
As for edges, I'm a bit confused, are you saying that edges don't
The fact of the matter is if it was working there would be players. There are plenty of MUDs out there that have huge player counts.
You can continue living in your current mindset and spew whatever negativity towards me you like. I personally don't care. I've had a blast with CF and come here from time to time to just read the forums and possibly think of a new character to play. I&
First Age - Thinhallen - Fight to the Death
People were being too friendly as level 50 (no heroes then) so I believe Cador trans'd all of the players into the Realm of the Dead and told everyone to fight to the death. I (Thinhallen human rager thief) wasted zero time and backstabbed Forsythe (gnome mage master?) at the very beginning because I figured it was the ragerly thing to do and th
..the fact of the matter is CF's barrier to entry is far too high and it scares off many people who are new or "casual" players from actually spending any significant time on CF. It's really just a matter of creating an "easy" button and you could easily up the numbers.
I hear far too many apologists about the state which CF is in saying it's just a matter of
..most people don't have 2 to 3 years to finally feel comfortable about a game. I know you stuck it out, but think of the countless others who may not have. If the game could keep newer players by reducing the boundaries to entry, it would be amazing. Could you imagine a player count in the 150-200 range? It's a different game altogether. The cabal wars become ridiculously dynamic with
These are just thoughts of course, but I'm just not seeing the great value from having Obs XP that's all You mentioned ranking, and obviously it can be monotonous, but generally you're doing it with a group where you can talk and build some bonds.
I just imagine if I was playing pretty regularly that I would just create some bots to walk me through areas looking at random shit.
